Scene Study And Rehearsal Technique
This is an ongoing class with an 8 week (2 month) initial commitment for new students.
This is a weekly scene study class for the actor who wants to make this work a significant part of their life either professionally or part time.
We will focus on the truth of the moment, honest listening, allowing yourself to be affected and altered by what your scene partner is offering you and embracing spontaneity and immediacy.
This work is grounded in the belief that all acting is to explore the human condition and share through imagination and body.
What interests me is experiencing a human being breathing, walking, and living on stage.

What My Students Think
What My Students Think
Sharonlee McLean
“I have been in class for approximately 2 months. I am so grateful to him for his incredible insight into every student, speaking to them in ways they can understand so that they can follow through.
He’s able to capture everything we need to know in order to be excellent in our craft. While studying with him I booked three acting jobs. Two for Stage and one for Television.
I really give him credit for giving me the confidence during the auditioning process in order for me to get the call saying, “you booked it”.
Thank you Michael. Thank you.”
Merritt Glover
“You are always a part of the success! I’ll never forget what I learned about the craft from you”
Foss Curtis
“In this scene study class, I was challenged in ways that I hadn’t realized I needed. With Michael’s help I was able to step outside of my comfort zone and stretch myself as an actor.
He creates a safe space in which to delve into the emotional life of character work. Drawing from his own experience as an actor, Michael gives his students the tools and skills to hold their own in the professional world of theatre and film.”
Lisa Gryshchenko
“Class has become a space where I can explore creatively and take risks without fear of judgment. I’m getting a lot out of the process of experimenting, listening, and learning from others.
The vibe feels supportive and curious, and I’ve started to notice real growth in my confidence and openness as a performer.
I have received constructive and valuable feedback that helps me improve my skills and boosts my belief in myself, which is so important for maintaining the passion and motivation to move forward in this challenging industry.”
Crystal Ann Munoz
“Studying with Michael helped me break through some self-imposed barriers that had been hindering me as an actor for quite a while. His class challenged, frustrated, and pushed me *this* much farther than I thought I could go- it renewed my self-confidence.
Michael rarely tells you want you hear, but always tells you what you need to hear, to help you grow.
He does this mindfully, respectfully, and often with a wicked sense of humor.
Working with Michael, I started consistently getting callbacks, and I booked three acting jobs with companies I highly respect and am excited to work for.
I can’t recommend his class highly enough.”
Morgan Cox
“Michael Mendelson’s Scene Study class has been a part of my life for many years. It’s a space for me to get curious and play in a supportive community of like minded artists. There is a collective commitment to growth.
Michael chooses scenes and characters specifically for each individual, taking time to work moment-to-moment and provide feedback.
It’s important for me to receive feedback from someone who not only lets me know when something is working, but encourages me to explore different choices when something is struggling.
There is a constant encouragement to “be curious”. This class reminds me of my grad school days and that is one of the reasons I keep coming back.
Scene Study has without a doubt helped me find more groundedness as a performer.”
Adam Roper
“Studying with Michael is a transformative experience for any actor looking to move past their own creative plateaus. His scene study class is a masterclass in ‘the truth of the moment,’ pushing you to move beyond the technical and into an honest exchange with your scene partner.
Michael has a rare ability to pinpoint exactly where you are holding back, and he challenges you to step outside your comfort zone in a space that feels both rigorous and remarkably safe.
You don’t just leave his class a better actor; you leave with a renewed confidence and a clearer connection to your own creative voice.”
Charles Nicholson
“After moving up to Portland, I decided to re-ignite my old passion for acting, but I felt a bit out of sorts. After all, I did not know a
soul who could recommend a good scene study class. As luck would have it, I met Michael Mendelson.
Michael proved to be just the coach I needed. I felt immediately at home. Michael’s actor’s intuition, director’s razor sharp skills at stagecraft, humility, humor and grace opened me up to what I thought was long past and helped me to make acting vibrant and current.
Added to that, his troop of actors were so welcoming to me and in short order, I found my actor’s home.
Thank you, Michael.”
Lewis Mize
“Working with Michael has helped me in so many ways. He has helped me find new avenues to explore character work and helped me find the confidence within myself to be the artist I am.
The class is set up so all students get to witness one anothers work, and in so doing, become richer for it.”
Tasha Danner
“Michael’s class challenges you to get rid of habits that hold you back as an actor. He encourages the things that allow authenticity and truth in a scene – true human connection, vulnerability, physicality, and vocal technique.
He sees potential weaknesses and illuminates them, so you can be a more complete and honest actor and not fall back into patterns that hinder your abilities.”
